Aqua Map is an app designed for marine navigation using the iPhone, iPad, or an Android device. It is a very powerful app but it may take some effort to access all of its capabilities. I intend to demonstrate and explain its uses for marine navigation and answer questions as time permits.
Overview
Aqua Map can function as a chartplotter replacement given the cost of an iPad and the $20 for the app and US charts, it’s a bargain compared to buying a chartplotter and associated charts. The one time fee of $20 covers lifetime updates to the US charts four times a year. They are based on the NOAA ENC digital charts but have been modified for ease of viewing and seamless usage when panning from location to location.
Features
- Boat location is continuously updated and a track can be applied to record where you’ve been.
- North up or heads up view options are provided based on either GPS direction or compass direction.
- Routes, waypoints, and tracks can be imported and exported using the iPad “Open In” feature.
- Routes and waypoints can be formed just by tapping on the screen. Each tap adds a new route point.
- Active Captain can be downloaded for off-line use and comments can be uploaded, all within the app.
- Tides and current stations are include which work without an internet connection. Past and future times can be used to determine tides and currents at any station,
- Distances can be found with the included scale which can be moved to any position for measurement.
I intend to add a step by step guide in the panel at left on how to fully utilized the many features of Aqua Map. It is much more powerful than it first appears and the Aqua Map team is constantly adding new features.
